Coming Home to Your Body: A Guide to Embodiment
By Maren Swenson · 7 min read
For many women, the body has become a project. Something to manage, fix, shrink, tone, or discipline into submission. We've been so conditioned to live from the neck up — analyzing, planning, performing — that we've forgotten what it feels like to actually inhabit ourselves.
Embodiment is the practice of coming home. Not to a perfect body, but to your body. To the intelligence that lives in your skin, your breath, your bones. This is the work I guide women through as an embodiment and style coach in Utah.
"Your body is not a problem to solve. It is a home to return to."
— Maren Swenson
What Is Embodiment, Really?
Embodiment is the practice of being fully present in your physical body — not just living in your mind. It means feeling your feet on the ground. Noticing the rise and fall of your breath. Registering what your body wants before your mind overrides it.
For women who have spent years people-pleasing or disconnecting from their needs, embodiment is radical. It is a return to the most fundamental form of self-trust: trusting what your body is telling you.
Embodiment is the bridge between knowing who you want to be and actually living as her.
You can't think your way into a new life. You have to feel your way there.
5 Gentle Embodiment Practices to Begin Today
Morning Body Scan
Before you reach for your phone, close your eyes and scan from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet. Notice where there is tension, warmth, energy, or numbness. Don't try to change anything — just notice.
Dress by Sensation, Not Habit
Instead of wearing what's 'appropriate,' ask your body what it wants to feel today. Soft? Structured? Flowing? Let your body guide your style choices — this is where embodiment meets expression.
Slow Movement
Dance slowly in your living room. Stretch without a YouTube video telling you how. Let your body move in the way it wants — without performance, without audience, without judgment.
The 'Hand on Heart' Reset
When overwhelm strikes, place one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Take five slow breaths. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and reconnects you to your body's wisdom.
Mirror Gazing With Compassion
Stand in front of a mirror and look at yourself — not to evaluate, but to witness. Say 'I see you' to the woman looking back. This is one of the most powerful embodiment practices for healing body disconnection.

When you begin dressing with intention, something shifts in your relationship with your body. You stop dressing to hide and start dressing to express. You stop viewing your body as an obstacle and start experiencing it as a canvas.
This is why style and embodiment are inseparable in the Wild Serenity approach. Your clothes are not separate from your body. They are an extension of how you inhabit yourself.
"When you stop fighting your body and start listening to it, everything changes — including how you dress."

What is embodiment and why does it matter?+
Embodiment is the practice of being fully present in your body — feeling, sensing, and living from a place of physical awareness rather than only mental analysis. It matters because self-trust, confidence, and authentic expression are all rooted in the body, not just the mind.
How does embodiment relate to personal style?+
When you're connected to your body, you make style choices from sensation and self-expression rather than obligation or trend-following. Embodied dressing means choosing clothes that feel like an extension of who you are, creating harmony between your inner and outer worlds.
